Bathroom renovation trends

One of the most frequented rooms in a home is the bathroom! This is the space where you start and end your day, refresh your soul, and prepare yourself for life. It’s also one of the best places to begin your renovation! Whether you’re looking to add small touches, or do a full renovation, an upgrade to your bathroom is one of the easiest ways to liven up your home. Below are some current trends, and things to avoid when designing your future bathroom.

currently Trending:

Sustainable Materials

Materials like wood, bamboo, and real stone are having a major resurgence now. With benefits in both ecological impact and aesthetics, these materials will give you bang for your buck. They look great, match most color schemes seamlessly, and most importantly, will last! Everyone knows that wooden house in their area, it's been there forever! Earth materials, when installed and sealed properly, will long outlast your need in the home. The style is timeless, the products are gorgeously simplistic, and the value outweighs the initial investment.

Statement Lighting

Your bathroom is one of the first rooms you visit in the morning, and one of the last before you go to bed. Bright fluorescent lights disrupt your circadian rhythm, and overall can hurt your eyes! We want your bathroom to be a welcoming space. Warm and light sconces are becoming more and more popular. In combination with natural light, these provide plenty of illumination throughout the day. At nighttime, the soft and warm glow is all you need before you go to bed. As style trends evolve, you’re guaranteed to find something that fits your taste. The bolder the better, as many are using their lighting as the statement of the bathroom, rather than an accent wall or bright, bold colors.

Stone Accents

As previously mentioned, natural materials like stone are pushing themselves to the forefront of design right now. Stone in the bathroom, however, is for more than just one fixture. Having a cohesive stone vanity, flooring, and partial backsplash adds texture & richness to the space! Having one material flow through the foundation of your bathroom, allows the details to stand out. Don’t underestimate the power stone has over a blanket white space!

phasing out:

Tile Countertops

The small, square tile countertops that your grandmother loved have come and gone…again. We’re all for a retro feel here at Kelleher Renovations, but these pieces are simply unlivable. They’re difficult to clean, a pain to maintain, and frankly hard to design well. When used as an accent in a largely untouched area, like a decor piece, this style of “subway tile” is gorgeous & timeless! However, in a frequented area such as a bathroom countertop, other options may be more suitable.

Tech Overload

Visit the newest coffee shop in your area, or anything renovated in the early 2020s and you’ll find one of these mirrors with a built-in LED light. The seamless touch controls are cool! The light is perfect for Instagram. But when it comes to a wellness space such as your personal bathroom, this gadget is a big no. It’s not just the ring light, however. Like we mentioned earlier, your bathroom is the first and last room you visit after the bedroom. Any technology that streamlines the stressors in your life, should be integrated, but steer clear of unnecessary electronics in such a personal space as this one.

Total Colorwash

We all know that white is a *safe* choice when it comes to renovations. But is it the best choice for you? If you’re renovating for sale, you have a decision to make! Oftentimes, homeowners will purchase a freshly renovated house, just to start the process all over again. You can save everyone time, and earn a little more money, for choosing a more design forward plan. Rooms can still be safe, while utilizing more pieces with character! In addition, if you’re renovating the bathroom purely for you, go with what makes YOU happy! If a clean-cut all white finish eases your mind, let’s do it. If walking into a spa-like room makes you feel like a million bucks, let’s knock it out! Our advice here is to try to steer away from one solid color overruling the design in your bathroom. Add textures, add accents, add character to keep it exciting!

With all that being said, it’s important to keep in mind that there are a million and one directions to go with design as a whole, but especially with as personal a space as your bathroom. Trends will always come and go, but looking at the latest can offer fresh ideas in the planning steps of a renovation. At Kelleher Renovations, we make the process wholly about you! We start with free consultations, list your priorities and absolute no’s, and ensure your dreams come to life (all while staying on budget!)
